Socks, Blankets, and Kittens!

Haven't posted in a while (again). Had another bout of depression (again). Lost my mojo (again). But things are looking up (again). This last year has been extremely difficult. Between moving, starting a new job, the one-year of my dad's death, breaking up, getting back together, then breaking up again with Steven, and just all the other stuff life throws at you it's no wonder I've been all over the place. But let me focus on the good things: I spent a lot of time cuddling with my cute furball, Bubba. I went to see my friend Megan and managed to give her completed (!) socks!
After spending some time with Megan, her bf Burrito (my nickname for him) and her friend Apryl, I went further up north to visit my brother, his fiance and their son, Wyatt. I met a lot of cute kitties and reminisced about my parents while going through boxes of stuff. It was a short trip, but it was nice to see the lake and to catch up with one of my favorite library ladies, Elizabeth, from Northland as well.

I also went to State Fair and ate way too much greasy food. It was a blast and I definitely got my steps in that day (I was sore for about two days after). Then I wandered down to southern Wisconsin and visited some college friends who I haven't seen in a while. I met their critters, walked along the beach, ate delicious German food, drank hard root beer (amazing!), performed/received tarot readings, and had deep conversations about life with my old roomie Brad. <3 It was just what I needed. I saw my ex, Steven, on my way back home and we had a great conversation about life and love. I feel like I'm in a better place now to reinvent my life. I've felt so lost since my dad's one year death anniversary. And I was handling the grief reasonably well in Iowa, but then the move happened and when his one-year death anniversary came up I just kind of lost my ambition. I'm on some new meds now which should help me focus and take on the day. I feel this renewed energy to live life, not just exist. My parents are dead (lots of people lost their parents younger than I was, so I'm grateful for the 24/27 years I had with them), but that doesn't mean I should stop living my life. I need to move on and learn to live without them. It's hard, no doubt, but they wouldn't want me grieving so long and hard for them. They'd want me to move on, fall in love, explore, travel, and create memories of my own. So that's what I plan to do.

I've noticed the new meds are helping me focus on things I enjoy but gave up. Before, I'd get so overwhelmed because I couldn't focus on anything for any amount of time so I'd just do nothing. I stopped knitting, reading, writing, walking, and even watching shows I enjoyed because I couldn't focus. It was bad. Now I can focus longer so I feel that drive coming back. I want to read, knit, and walk more. I'm not 100% yet, but things are improving. And I can tell they're improving because this past weekend I finally finished that test knit shawl from last year! Well, technically it's not finished finished because I still have to block it, but it's off the needles! It was the first time I'd knit in a while and the first time I'd completed something in a long while. I think Bubba missed me knitting too:
I also finished an afghan after trying to figure out how to widen it. I tried picking up stitches off the side, but it didn't really work. So I single crocheted the edges in gray then built on that. It's not the prettiest fix, but it's just for me so I don't mind. Bubba enjoyed cuddling up with it while I was working on it; he doesn't seem to cuddle up in it now that it's done. Silly cat.

That's about it for the last few months, but like I said, I feel the mojo coming back as I start to feel better and more productive.  I'm even heading to the Humane Society tonight to find a lil furry friend for Bubbs. He's been acting rather clingy lately and I think it's because he's lonely. He's alone from 7:40-5 everyday so it's no wonder he cries and wants attention when I get home. I'm hoping a kitten will keep him occupied and give me another fluff to love. :)

Keeping Up with the Kelley

Jen posted again after a while, so you know what that means...I have to post to try and keep up with her. Seriously, when she posts it reminds me I have a blog and should maybe write in it from time to time. I get discouraged after a while because I know this blog won't become something huge like YarnHarlot or something, but 'eh. At the very least it organizes my knitting thoughts. So let the organization begin...

Last night I finished a cowl for Lauren and it made me wonder what other projects I have lying around unfinished. So I took stock and realized there are a lot. This doesn't even count the items I've promised people and haven't cast on yet. These are projects on the needles/hooks and languishing in baskets and bags around my apartment.
Jen's '70s Sweater started in...oh...2011?

My spinning...started in 2013?

Super secret fingerless gloves started 2014.

Capelet for Mary started 2014.

Stole for me started 2014

Mountain afghan started 2014.

Megan's skyp socks started 2013.

Bellatrix test knit started 2014.

Plus size sweater started 2014

So there we go. There may be one or two more hiding in the craft room but this is the bulk of it. Now the big question...what to finish?

Cold Librarians Need Warm Cats

I decided I wanted to knit a sock that wasn't evil. So I cast on a new pattern. So far so good (minus the part where I forgot to kfkbkf on the increase row so I was way below stitches and had to rip out over an inch of my work). I really like the pattern (cables...yum) and the needles. And Bubba likes it too.
Bubba's sexy pose.
Then I got cold.
So I decided to cast on a sweater for myself. Yes. Myself. The last plus size sweater attempts did not end well for anyone. So I'm using good needles, fabulous yarn (Cascade 220 Peruvian Wool <3), and I'm using a pattern from my Plus Size Knits book that I bought a million years ago. I'm on my way, sweater. Be ready to be toasty come...June?

Who doesn't love turquoise ribbing?

Couch + Blanket + Downton Abbey = Happy Librarian

Well, New Year's came and went and life goes on. Scott headed back up North and is doing well. Already found a girlfriend. Nothing can slow that boy down. I went back to work and made LibGuides, created flyers for databases, and met with faculty. I'm looking forward to having the students back on campus so I can get back into the classroom. Though, at the same time, I like the peace and quiet of the library when the students are away. That's life in an academic library for you. Those students are my job security...and hopefully I can get through to a few and spark, fuel, and whatever-other-fire-metaphor them into the path of lifelong learning.

Things at home are quiet. Bubba has been exceptionally clingy lately. I'm not sure why, but it's cute. I haven't been sleeping well and I'm rather tired all the time. Which is probably from the lack of sleep. So I sleep in late on the weekends, which invariably screws up my schedule during the week. Especially since I go back to working 8am-5pm starting tomorrow. Downton Abbey is my reason for waking up on Sundays. I watched the two hour premier last week with Cindy and Andie. I had a tea party but because of the bitter cold a number of people couldn't make it. It's a standing invitation for people to come over and watch Downton Abbey since I have a huge TV. I also have a couch now. Which is extraordinary. I've been sitting on it, lounging on it, and sleeping on it since I got it last Wednesday. It's extremely comfortable and I can't wait to go home (I'm at work waiting for a group of students to come in for some library info) and sit on it again to watch Downton Abbey again. I'm so incredibly obsessed with the show it's not funny. My only solace is that there are people even more obsessed than me.

Knitting...well, I put those socks somewhere where the sun don't shine (my bookshelf behind some pretty condolence yarn). I'm wondering if I should frog them and start anew with a different pattern. But that'd be even more disheartening considering I'm almost done with one. So to take my mind off my sock sorrows I started a blanket. Because that's simple. The pattern is simple, but I'm worried it'll be rather small. I have two afghan skeins I bought eons ago for a blanket and haven't touched until a week ago. It's a leaf design:

Which is lovely and quick. I learned the awkwardness of purling through the back loop. But like I said, I'm worried it'll be too small. If it is too small, I'll end up using it as a lap blanket for work.

But that's all that's new in my life...how is everyone else?

Something Productive

Okay, I'd like to point out that I'm anything but original. Jen started up her knitting blog again and made into a spinning/knitting blog because she's just that caliber of awesome. I'm not. But since she revitalized her blog, I figured I should follow in her footsteps and do the same. What can I say? She inspires me.

I'm not sure why I stopped posting. Maybe because things got too hectic. I graduated, moved back to Drummond, worked at APIS for two months, then moved to Iowa. That's a lot in two months. So I didn't have time for knitting. In fact, I think I've only completed two or three projects in the last six months. Which is pathetic. But I also have other reasons for lack of inspiration. My father passed away in October (the morning after my 27th birthday...birthdays suck) so I've been going to Northern Wisconsin and Peotone and Milwaukee and every which way the last couple months (I can't believe it'll be two months this 15th). The grief hasn't made me especially keen on my usual hobbies. But, I want to get back to knitting because when I do and when I work a pattern I love and when I'm watching something lovely and Jane Austen-y or Downton Abbey-y I almost feel normal again.

So let me tell you about my job, because it's pretty spectacular. Well, spectacular for a recent grad anyway. I'm incredibly lucky to be offered a job doing exactly what I hoped to do: Reference & Instruction. That's my title btw...Reference & Instruction Librarian. Doesn't that just make you smile? It makes me smile. I'm in North Iowa in a little town called Forest City at a little college named Waldorf College. It's about the size of Northland which I'm thankful for because it allows me get a well-rounded experience rather than just being a one-trick pony. When it comes time for me to move on, working at a small library will work in my favor. I'll be able to present myself as flexible and experienced. I work with a great group of people. My director is a riot and wonderfully supportive. I get to try new things, learn, fumble, and make a difference (hopefully). The campus is quiet and it has that small, campus family feel. Even though I'd only been here less than three months when my dad passed away, the outpouring of support and love was heartwarming. That's how I know I'm at a good place.

I started a knitting group on campus: The Knit Wits of North Iowa. It's an open community group and we meet in the library every other Thursday night. I was hoping more students would be involved, but it's still early. Maybe we can gather some more interest next semester. The library team was really supportive of me starting this group and we have a good 5-6 people who regularly attend. Everyone's really friendly and it keeps me on my toes. The first night I had to teach two people how to left-hand crochet. Thank God for Google.

Projects. Well. I kind of gave up on the New Years Resolution thing. Maybe I'll finish one project per year until I'm all caught up. That's the rate I'm going. Not even that rate really. I'm not done with Andrew's Socks.

It's still mostly a Soc...I have to finish the gusset and the foot and the toe. And then the other sock. Maybe I should try knitting English and see if that makes the pattern any easier. It's the twists that get me down. My tension is so tight that it's hard to get my needle under the stitch for the left and right twists. Which makes up the bulk of the pattern. Yay. They're pretty though.

I did a test knit to try and get me out of my funk. I figured having a deadline would help. I made Halona by Allison LoCicero. I chose simple colors and really enjoyed the edging. And I love the wingspan because I'm fat. It can actually wrap around my shoulders. :)

I also made a lace shawl, Cassiope by Alexandra Beck, in my beautiful fall yarn that I got at Yarn Harbor in Duluth, MN with Madeline. (Yarn Harbor is one of my favorite yarn stores. What more could I ask for? Yarn and Lake Superior!)

So I'm really into shawls lately. I'm thinking of starting some mittens for Jen and/or Mary's capelet which is kind of like a shawl.

So what's on my knitting needles? Well. Andrew's Socks. A stoll  from Loops & Threads in my beautiful forest green graduation yarn. And I still have a sweater on my hook for Jen. I hit a road block months and months ago and never figured it out. I should look at it again and call Megan, my go to crocheter.

That's probably enough for tonight. I'll try to post more regularly. It'll give me something to do anyway and maybe it'll help get me out of this funk.

Adulthood? Really?

I graduated from graduate school. I went to Iowa for an in-person interview. I got the job. I'm moving back home for a little while before I start. It's been a crazy month. I finished my classes and passed them all with flying colors (well, except web design but I missed an assignment due to my lack of motivation). All my crap is piled into my closet and I'm not really sure how I'm going to fit it all in my lil car tomorrow morning. Because it's Memorial Day everything is closed and it's screwing up my moving timeline (which is an awful thing to say, but it's true). That doesn't mean I don't respect or remember all the folks who fought for our country...but I had to deposit my checks through an ATM and it was a weird experience. And I have to call TWC tomorrow and cancel my internet and return the box...somewhere. Then I have to pack my car then check out of my apartment. Finally ending my day by driving 6 hours back home. I know in a post not to long ago that I couldn't wait until it was all over, but now I'm freaking out because it's all happening too fast. I just have to remain calm, hike up my big girl pants and deal with it.

Knitting. Funny. So because I've been so busy with school and avoiding school I haven't been knitting. Prior to this past weekend, the last time I knit was when I visited Jen in Evanston in late April. Yea. It's been a while. This past week/end I did go to a Stitch 'n Bitch with my brother's girlfriend-who's-not-his-girlfriend and finished the ribbing for Andrew's sock. Yea...I just finished the cuff ribbing. Pathetic. This weekend I went to Kettle Moraine State Park and knitted in nature with my BFFFL Jen. I have about two rows of red. I need to get back to my old mojo. I think being away from the city will help. Lack of homework will also help.

I start working at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Thursday for my fourth season. It'll be cut short, however, since I got a real librarian job! Which means I'm moving to Iowa. I'm hoping to start August first so I can save up some money and move and find a place to move to and so on. It's very stressful being an adult. I don't recommend it.

Moving On...

So I haven't updated in a while. A few reasons for my absence include lack of knitting mojo, comps, school, work, and the intense desire to sleep. To sum it up, I have last-semester-itis. You'll be happy to hear I passed my comprehensive exams despite the awful questions and the complete void of comprehensive ability needed to complete them. Now that it's over...I have no ambition for anything else. I'm finding it incredibly difficult to work on other projects, papers, and anything school related. I do go to work. Mainly because I need the money and I can read a novel in between helping patrons. My hope is that the weeks will blur together and before you know it I'll wake up and it'll be May 19th (the day I graduate). In the mean time, I have to pass my classes so I work on stuff as needed.

Unfortunately, my lack of school motivation has crossed over into my knitting life. I completed all but one Christmas gift (I hate that hat) and I have yet to give Emma her gift (it's on my couch waiting to be wrapped). So I've moved on to the second part of my New Year's Resolution: gifts I've promised to people. You'll remember that the list is long and diverse. And there's no rhyme or reason for the order of the making of these gifts. So I cast on Andrew's socks a couple nights ago. He wanted a dark red and grey yarn and despite all the websites I searched, I couldn't find one that fit that description. I thought I found one, so I bought it but when I received it (in like 2 days, go Jimmy Bean Wool!) it was more red and purple so I lamented for a bit then put it away in my stash for a pair of socks for yours truly. (Why let the yarn go to waste?) When Jen was in town, we went to Ruhama's in Whitefish Bay and found a lovely dark red and blue yarn that reminded me of Andrew and his red plaid shirts. To add a touch of grey, when I was in Duluth at Yarn Harbor I got a lovely skein of grey yarn to use for the cuffs, heels, and toes. I wasn't sure how it was going to look at first, but now that I have an inch of the grey cuff and a few rounds of the red/blue skein I kind of like it. Hopefully Andrew will too.

I also started Jen's 1977 McCall's sweater with the yarn I bought last spring. I really like the pattern because it's simple and I can watch copious amounts of I Love Lucy while working on it. I do have to change colors every few rows, but that's alright. I do not have enough yarn though. I blame the amounts given...it's amazing how different instructions were written just 30 or 40 years ago. I'll be making a trip to Michael's soon to pick up more yarn despite Jen's suggestion to use the yarn I have lying around. I want it to be cohesive and I'm not that creative when it comes to colors. I don't have an eye for them like some of my other friends who are extremely artistic. (I always thought it was interesting how impressed people are when I show them something I've knit. It's really just a skill. I don't design the pattern and I simply pick colors I like to use in the pattern.) Hopefully it goes well.

That's all the knitting news I have for you. I'll try to keep you posted as things progress. Happy Yarn Folks!

Super (Yarn) Bowl

Wait, what? A post not two days later?! I'm spoiling you all. I was up late last night (so like any other night) crocheting. I've been trying to figure out a scarf pattern to match my hat without succumbing to those ridiculous diamonds. Because when I was working on my hat I had Megan by my side...to start the diamonds for me. I didn't have that last night. So I gave up on the scarf idea and went for a cowl. Ooo...cowls. Short, simple, sweet, efficient (couldn't think of another 's' adjective). So I made this lovely purple cowl with long double crochets. It was one of those repetitive stitches that I couldn't stop doing! I memorized the two row repeat. I crocheted until my wrist ached and stopped clicking (it usually clicks). During this surge of crocheting I was also watching Gilmore Girls. So, since I have all the time in the world because, you know, I don't have work or class or job applications to fuss over I've been having a Gilmore Girls marathon. It's a show of my adolescence and I never saw it start to finish. So I'm abusing my University library privileges (not really, but sometimes I feel guilty because Universal Borrowing was intended for scholastic endeavors) by ordering all of Gilmore Girls. I suppose I could blame UW-Whitewater since they have all. of. them. Anyway, it just fed into this spiral of crocheting and Gilmore Girls. At one point I thought, "Hey...I'll go to bed around midnight. Get some shut eye." Then Jess was sleeping in his car after Luke's sister came to town and Rory got a bad grade on a paper and Richard and Emily separated! (None of that was in one episode...more like five). I had to keep going. The skein got smaller...the episodes just kept going on and on...who was I to stop it? To make a long, somewhat pathetic story short I made a cowl. Last night.

Which leads me to a different problem. Tonight is Kayla's sort of Super Bowl Party (Go Ravens! I wonder how Edgar Allan Poe would feel about his masterpiece being turned into a mascot for a NFL team?). What makes it a sort of Super Bowl Party of is that the majority of the guests aren't that big into football. So it's a party to eat, drink, knit, and be merry while the Super Bowl plays in the background. (Okay, there will be some football fans there. Like 3 or 4. I'm going to visit with friends I haven't seen in a while and knit). Here's where it gets problematic. I don't have anything to work on! I know, I know...I have a huge list of stuff to start/work on. BUT! I don't have patterns picked out or the yarn purchased for most of those projects. The only thing on my needles is Megan's Christmas hat and I can't knit that with her right there. It wouldn't be polite. Though, one could argue it wasn't very polite to purchase the yarn with her either. Meh. Anyway. I do have the yarn for Jen's 70s sweater. But I'd rather work on something I won't have to pay much attention to. And since the 70s sweater is crochet and a sweater, my nose would be stuck in the pattern the whole time. Maybe another scarf? Just absently knitting? Or I could maybe work on Megan's lotus hat...since I've knit that before maybe it'll be a bit more mindless. I'll have to see about that. Another option is...socks. Socks are small and portable and I've been eyeing the sock yarn I bought not to long ago with the blues and greens and oranges and it'd be lovely made into a cabled pattern. But I'd be knitting it for me. And then I'd be breaking my New New Year's February resolution. Already. Oh the trials and tribulations.

Pink, Interlace, Lace, Gauge and My Dream Job

Hello my lovely blogger stalkers! I hope you are all well and happy and have plenty of yarn around you during this hectic time of year. For me, knitting has been my salvation as I only have two more weeks until I complete my first year at graduate school. I'm starting to stress: headaches, stomach aches, sobbing uncontrollably (okay, maybe not the last one, but the urge to sob is there). To help me through it all I dedicate a good chunk of my time to knitting. This is a requirement for my well being. I get my work done, so I'm not neglecting anything. Fact: I spent close to 6-8 hours on a PowerPoint presentation with a recorded voice over for one of my classes. A project only worth 10 points! But I had to spend that much time to get it right and somewhat acceptable. Therefore, I need to spend equal or more time knitting or holding yarn. Life is all about balance. Anyway, here's what I've been working on:
Pretty pink fingerless gloves for Erin!

It's like Thing...only in pink!

They're a bit small on me, but Erin is small.

These were quick to knit up. I finished the first one in less than 5 hours. And that's with interruptions. I won't tell you where...

So pretty!

Then last night I finished knitting Sara's cowl! But I had to block it. Since it's wool it stretches a bit and the finished piece has to measure 24 inches. So I took it into the bathroom and gave it a quick, gentle rinse under the sink and then lightly squeezed out the excess water. I then pinned the cowl onto a piece of cardboard I saved for such blocking excursions (I don't block too many pieces, otherwise I'd invest in blocking boards. Cardboard works well enough). Blocking your knitting is important because it flattens the work. For this cowl, the "weaved" joins were a bit bunched. Blocking helped to flatten it out so it's easier to wear. Most people block lace pieces and sweaters. It can also give your piece shape depending on how you pin it. I had a purse I felted and I pinned the handle into a lovely curve.
I'm so artsy! (I can almost feel my photography friends shudder).

I just adore the colorway!
And that leaves the sock I'm knitting! It's a beautiful lace pattern (I won't block it though, no point when it's just going to stretch out a bit anyway from wear!) made with a gorgeous purple yarn! I described the yarn in an earlier blog post. It's lovely and makes me so incredibly happy that I purchased a different shade of purple for another pair of socks. What's really surprised me knitting this up is how well the Harmony circular needles are working! The last few pairs of socks I've tried to make with the Harmony needles was so excruciating that I gave up after about an inch or so. I'd have ladders (gaps in my knitting where the tension wasn't tight enough) and the yarn would catch on the needles! All sorts of issues. But for these socks, it's working beautifully.

And finally, dear bloggers...here's a question I received from Ginger about gauge:
"My primary knitting projects have been afghans and Christmas socks--both years ago. I have a problem already with the gauge. The pattern says 4" square. On #7 needles, I knit two gauges, one in stockinette and one in moss, the pattern stitch. No stitches per inch are indicated on the pattern. My pieces measure 4 1/4 inches. Do I need to use another needle size to make the right size garment? (#8?)."

The quick and simple answer is, yes, adjust your needle to get the correct gauge. Her gauge is most likely off because of her tension. Her tension isn't wrong; everyone's tension is just different which is why they include gauge instructions in patterns. Gauge is defined as the "tightness (or looseness) of your knitting" (Radcliffe, The Knitting Answer Book). In this case, you should switch to a bigger needle and repeat the swatch in the moss stitch instructions (20 stitches/28 rows = 4 inches) and in stockinette stitch (19 stitches/26 rows = 4 inches). The pattern doesn't include stitches per inch, but it should be around 7 stitches per inch. Try a #8 and see what you've got.

That is all my knitting friends! Remember to knit and/or crochet this week! If you have a question regarding knitting, please drop me a line! I'd be happy to find the answer for you!

Ps. I just visualized my dream job: reference librarian in a knitting library! How magical would that be?!

Pride & Prejudice + Sock Knitting = Happy Bekky

Guess what!? I finished the sweater! It took a lot of time, frogging, knitting, freaking out texts to Jen, and movies to complete it. I'm happy with how it turned out, though I am worried about the fit. I'll send the sweater to Memo this week and once she has it, she can have her boyfriend take pictures of her wearing it. Wanna see it? I know you do...
Isn't it lovely? I really like how the cowl turned out. I still think it's inside out, but it was one of those occasions where all was well. Mistakes can turn out okay. Lesson learned.
So now what am I going to knit now that this sweater is done? The red cowl? Yes, but I'm pretty sure it's an unwritten rule that once a knitter finishes a project she has to start another despite how many WIPs are collecting dust. I know a lot of knitters who will corroborate this. So instead of doing homework, working out, or anything remotely productive I pulled out some sock yarn, my Favorite Socks: 25 Timeless Designs from Interweave book, and set out to start some beautiful lace socks. Did you catch it? One lil super important piece is missing...needles! I knit socks using the Magic Loop method (DPNs are annoying. (Oh, right...DPNs=Double Pointed Needles) For more information on Magic Loop see http://www.knittinghelp.com/video/play/magic-loop). I use Addi Turbo size 2 circular needles. They are my joy, my salvation, my dream come true! Sadly, I left them in Northern Wisconsin. At least that's my theory since I tore my room apart looking for them. So I settled for my Harmony Wood needles from KnitPicks. They're pretty and rainbow, but I haven't had great success when it comes to knitting socks. My guess is because certain yarns catch on wood needles and my tension is rather tight. I decided to give it a try regardless since I was desperate to start these socks. I'm using Deborah Norville Serenity Sock Weight yarn (50% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Rayon made from Bamboo, and 25% Nylon) in a beautiful variegated purple or "violas" as they call it. It's going well so far. This is my day in a nutshell:
Nothing like knitting socks and some Pride & Prejudice. The good one with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle *swoon*. I have about an inch done on the socks, but I should stop since I have some homework to finish for class tomorrow. I wish I were independently wealthy so I could just knit all day. Oh well. Such is life.
In other news, Jen's coming to Milwaukee this weekend! She recently moved to Chicago and I bugged her to come visit me before I head back to Northern Wisconsin for the summer. I can't wait to knit and drink beer at the bar like the good ol' days. Until then...keep knitting!
